- Call the Albion Fellows Bacon Center Domestic Violence Crisis Line: (812) 422-5622 or toll-free 1-800-339-7752. A crisis counselor or volunteer will help you sort out your legal options, find an immediate safe shelter and provide other support services.
- If you want to leave, remember that safety is a priority. If you must leave without anything, you can go back later with the police to get your personal property.
- If at all possible, take your children. It is easier to get custody if the children are with you.
If you have time to pack, take:
- Clothes and personal items
- Important papers such as marriage license, birth certificates, Social Security cards, bank account numbers, tax returns, etc.
- Items of sentimental value such as photo albums or gifts your abuser may destroy to hurt you.
- Prescription drugs.
- Vehicle and title.
When to leave
- Whenever you can leave safely, get out.
- Many individuals try to leave while the abuser is at work or asleep.
